Only 38% of respondents felt that the Parish would benefit from
small scale business units being built. Comments on the types of
businesses are included here:
“Depends
what it looks like (visual art). Not noisy businesses”
“Bakery
etc”
“Businesses
sympathetic to the countryside area, e.g. hurdle making, organic crops”
“Bakery”
“Business
units are invariably unsightly and inappropriate to the beautiful valley
here. They appear to have frequent changes of use and are often
unoccupied. Their arrival in this lovely country village would be a gross
mistake. Rural workshops, computer businesses etc in exciting buildings
would perhaps be more suitable as long as no inconvenience (noise, traffic
etc) was caused to existing residents”
“Taxi
business essential”
“Builders
yard, carpenters, nursery/child care”
“Arts
and craft businesses, other rural enterprises providing local employment.
Any type of business that would provide employment making travel to
Exeter, Newton Abbot unnecessary so long as business units were
well-managed and did not create pollution”
“Small
scale manufacture of rural / household things; any rural / country based
craft retailer / dist. e.g. hurdles”
“Low
tech, small businesses, individual studios.”
“Businesses
that would supply employment for locals including some jobs suitable for
part time work for young mothers with children in school”
“Farm
shop and 2nd public house.”
“Print
works/Publishing Local produce, Building Helping hand Bartersystem”
“Small
business units as long as in keeping with village and not industrial
looking building. Businesses that would maybe generate a few jobs for
others in the village and get people visiting the village.”
“2-3
man operation probably craft.”
“Delicatessen,
a proper restaurant, Internet café.”
“Small
units for local crafts i.e. pottery painting carpentry etc.”
“Premises
for processing locally produced foods. Premises for small office use which
could be shared by various small enterprises requiring an office.”
“Craft
style workshop small scale High quality IT and video conferencing
facilities so people can live in the village and work in large
organisations ‘virtually’ and without travelling round the country of
flying.”
“Single
story no toxic waste from chimney. Not involving frequent large deliveries
and collections adequate parking spaces would need to be included. Graphic
design, engraving, potter, artist, Picture frames, Architect, seamstress,
upholsterer, cabinet maker, furniture restorer.”
“Business
units: only if the traffic generated was minimal. Also need to be situated
on the main road to avoid large vehicles along the lanes.”
“Carpenters,
catering, gardening art studios. Anything that doesn’t create too much
noise of traffic.”
“Local
trading schemes i.e. Local food produce, local crafts; pottery; thatching;
willow sculptures/work.”
“As
Gidleigh meadow in Christow.”
“Local
food producers, Traditional crafts, small scale manufacturing.”
“Food,
Media, IT, Craft, Small manufacturing e.g. Joinery, electrics etc.”
Other
comments on other development issues included:
“Only
starter homes for local families. What sort of conversions in what
buildings? 2.4.5: Anything in keeping with the village. The new cottages
opposite the garage are fine. 2.4.6: If limited and beneficial to the
village”
“I
should like to see the existing character of the village maintained
without artificial prettying. I have given my opinion on the type of
housing that might be needed but such needs should be clearly identified
before building is encouraged. The objective should be to maintain a
village with a mixed age and social structure. I think there are better
locations for business units outside the parish”
“2.4.5:
Solar panelling, although an environmentally friendly way of generating
power, is ugly so needs to be positioned carefully so as not to cause a
“blot on the landscape” of the village.”
"Solar
panels look very unsightly in a lovely village. Any new housing
should be to resemble the existing buildings"
“A
water fountain would improve the visual character.”
“Under
grounding of overhead cables creates unnecessary high costs for
maintenance and repair. Plus the added noise and disruption for initial
burying and ongoing works.”
“There
is plenty of room on the edge of the village for low cost housing for
local people.”
“Houses
should be suitable for 3 generations. The planners should allow any
development of granny flats or bachelor pads as an extension to the main
home. So that we can look after elderly relatives etc. This would reduce
the need for new homes and residential care places. All build should be
environmentally friendly.”
“Any
proposed development must take careful note of the capacity of the
infra-structure to cope. The village road system is already under
considerable pressure, and the sewage system is out of date and working
beyond reasonable capacity. Any considerable expansion will out-run the
capacity of the school and would change the ambience of the village. Need
must be clearly shown.”
“I
think the visual art would have to be chosen really carefully: the wrong
choice could reduce the attractiveness of the village. Also rather sadly,
this might attract vandalism.”
“Under
grounding of the electric cables if that prevented electric black-outs.”
“I
have insufficient knowledge or information to answer this page.”
“Dunsford’s
roads & sewage system not suitable for many more housing
estates/business premises. This is a rural English Village Please Please
let is remain so. The visual Character of the village now completely
spoilt due to the eyesore provided by traffic calming.”
